Collect Supplies Before You Start Decorating
First you will want to make sure that you are properly prepared before you start. Nothing is worse than getting everything all decorated just to find out it does not work. So before you climb up that ladder take the time to check all of your lights and cords. It doesn’t seem to matter how carefully you put your lights away the previous year they seem to get tangled in storage somehow. You will want to make sure that you take the time to untangle all of your lights as well.
Hang Christmas Lights in Good Weather
Decorating when it is light outside and the weather is good gives you the best chance of avoiding injury. Your roof does not have lights on it so taking advantage of the natural light from the sun is the only way that you will be able to see everything properly while you decorate on your roof. If the forecast has rain, snow, or wind you may want to choose a different day to decorate. Decorating in rain or wind could cause injuries.
How Do You Hang Christmas Lights Without Damaging Roof & Siding?
When you are ready to climb up onto your roof make sure that you have someone out there with you to help. You will want someone to hold the ladder stead y while you climb up on the roof. They can also see what the roof looks like from down below and help you set the decorations in the place that you had intended to put them. If you do have an accident this person will be there to help address any injuries that you may have or call for emergency help if needed. As you are hanging your decorations do not hang them from your shingles! If you hang your lights or other decorations on your shingles you can cause damage to them while decorating. The other big concern here is that putting holes from the nails in your shingles allows moisture and other elements into your shingles. This can cause major damage to your shingles. We recommend using clips that hang on the gutters.
Can Christmas Lights Cause House Fires?
Make sure that you are careful with any electricity so that you do not inadvertently start a fire. Decorations and inflatable items need to be kept away from power lines. You will also want to use outdoor power cords. Outdoor power cords are built to withstand the elements safely. Indoor power cords are not built the same and are not safe for outdoor use. You will also want to make sure that you do not overload your circuit breakers.

After you have safely hung all of your decorations enjoy them throughout the holiday season. Make sure that when you are ready to take them down you take precautions as well.
